Proflex Jul 13–17 — War Reignites, Critical Earnings Week, Institutional Flows

Proflex Market Update — Week July 13 to July 17

War Reignites | Oil Near Month-High | Critical Earnings Week | Systematic Flows Turn Sellers

"The macro calendar goes quiet just as the two loudest risks (war and earnings) get louder. This is a week where market direction would be primarily decided by results and the geo-political tensions"
Proflex Panel

The détente is over.

After two weeks in which back-and-forth strikes stayed inside both sides' red lines, the Iran conflict has re-escalated hard: a consecutive week of active US-Iran fighting, a near-total halt to Strait of Hormuz shipping, and roughly 6,000 seafarers stranded on hundreds of vessels.

Brent has pushed back above $88 (up ~10% month-to-date) and WTI sits near $82. Oil and yields are rising together again, and that combination is the single most important thing on the tape.

The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,457 with the Nasdaq 100 the clear laggard down roughly 4% over the trailing month as the mega-cap complex de-rates into results.

The 10-year yield has backed up to 4.55%, the VIX has snapped up to ~18.8, and gold is holding the $4,000 line. Bitcoin, notably, is not playing its 2026 hero role this time but still holding the sell-off bottom, drifting near $64,200, well off the spring highs.

Here's the setup: The US data calendar is about as light as it gets, and we enter the FOMC blackout period a week from Wednesday so no Fed airtime.

That hands the microphone to two forces: whatever comes out of the war, and the second-heaviest earnings week of the season.

Two Mag-7 names — GOOGL and TSLA — report Wednesday after the close. When the macro goes quiet, results and geopolitics fill the vacuum.

Key Drivers This Week

War Reignites: Oil Is the Barometer Again

The variable we flagged five weeks ago that a fragile détente could crack if Iran "pushed things beyond the current state of play" has now materialized.

The tit-for-tat has widened from strictly military targets to bridges, utilities and port facilities, and the White House pressure campaign has stepped up, with reported US casualties over the weekend (unconfirmed as of this writing) raising the stakes further.

The prediction markets tell the story bluntly: Odds that Hormuz traffic normalizes have collapsed from a June peak near 69% to single digits, with traders now pushing "normalization" out to 2027.

This is the same playbook as March: oil is the real-time scoreboard for both the war's trajectory and the global economy.

When crude cools, it means the market is betting on resolution, and the S&P and Nasdaq have proven they can snap back violently once the energy bid lifts.

Right now crude is doing the opposite, and it is dragging yields up with it which is expected to be a near-term overhang on the market trajectory.

Proflex View: Ignore the headlines and watch the barrel. We expect near-time overhang in the markets due to the elevated tensions. The critical variable this week is whether either side crosses a genuine red line because that is what turns an oil premium into an oil shock.

The Earnings Gauntlet: GOOGL and TSLA Headline

This is the second-heaviest week of the season by S&P earnings weight: roughly 18% of the index reporting, some 86 S&P 500 names, including 21 companies above $100bn in market cap (INTC, IBM, TXN, T, VZ, TMUS, LMT, NOW, RTX, AXP, and more).

But the market's attention is binary: Alphabet and Tesla, both Wednesday after the close.

For GOOGL, the debate is no longer growth: Cloud Revenue Growth is running north of 60% and consensus revenue is up over 20%: it's whether the AI capex bill is worth it.

2026 capex guidance has already been lifted toward $180–190bn, and the market wants to see that spend convert into cloud backlog and margin.

For TSLA, the number that matters is automotive gross margin ex-credits (the 18–20% zone) and any hard detail on FSD/Robotaxi economics; deliveries are already known.

Proflex View: In a quiet-macro week, these two prints set the tape for the AI Trade. A clean Google result: Capex discipline plus cloud acceleration can put a floor under mega-cap tech that has quietly de-rated ~4% this month. A margin miss from either, into rising oil and yields could further intensify the overhang situation.

Institutional Flows: CTAs Turn Seller in Every Scenario

Here is the flow signal that matters.

BofA sees systematic positioning having rebuilt on the back of falling realized volatility — now the highest since the post-conflict selloff, though still below February's peak.

But for the second week running, they have downgraded the modeled price paths such that there is now selling in every scenario:

  • Flat market:–$15bn of selling (from +$11bn of buying the prior week)
  • Up market (~+3.5%): –$33bn of selling (from +$22bn — higher volatility flips the sign)
  • Down market (~–2.9%): –$212bn of selling (from –$88bn)

The asymmetry is the tell.
When even an up-tape now generates mechanical selling, the CTA cohort has quietly shifted from a tailwind to a headwind — and the down-case has ballooned to a –$212bn air pocket.

With realized vol having compressed the positioning back up, there is simply more to unwind if the war or an earnings miss forces a repricing.

Proflex View: The buy-the-dip mechanical bid that supported spring has inverted; the path of least resistance for these models is now lower, and a down-move would be amplified. Watch the key levels where these flows can amplify moves.

A Data-Light Week Hands the Mic to the Tape

On US macro, this is as quiet as the calendar gets: June leading indicators (a largely spent forecasting tool), June new home sales and July flash PMIs on Friday, plus the usual weekly claims — which last printed a healthy 208,000.

With the FOMC blackout beginning a week from Wednesday, no Fed member will speak on policy.

Treasury supply picks back up but only via the little-watched 20-year bond and a 10-year TIPS auction — worth watching only as a read on whether the yield back-up is finding demand.

🔍 What We're Watching

  • Brent above/below $88 — the single cleanest read on whether the conflict is widening or stalling
  • GOOGL & TSLA Wednesday after the close — capex discipline and auto margins set the tone for mega-cap
  • The 10-year at 4.55% — if oil keeps yields climbing, the rate-cut case and tech multiples both compress
  • CTA down-case (–$212bn) — any red-line breach or margin miss trips an amplified, not cushioned, move

Data in the week ahead:

🧭 Proflex Playbook – Discipline in an Stretched Rally

With War Picking Up, Institutional Flows Selloff, International market selloff, we see the market to absorb signification shocks. But the speed of this move demands respect, not complacency.

Our conviction stays anchored in the data:

  • Focus on Structural Growth: Continue to overweight the secular AI theme, recognizing its multi-year runway.
  • Anticipate Shallow Corrections: Use dips as accumulation opportunities, not reasons for fear, understanding that "none of the corrections stick."
  • Diversify Thoughtfully: Recognize the "decorrelation" across asset classes; consider gold, silver and Bitcoin for portfolio resilience.
  • Develop Mental Models: Prioritize long-term planning (6-12 months out) over short-term news, aiming for consistent, incremental gains.
